The candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Peter Azi, on Wednesday emerged the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly after the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Istifanus Mwansat, from Pankshin South, stepped down.
Mr. Azi was member of the assembly from 2007 to 2011, but failed to be re-elected in 2011. He contested again in the 2015 elections and won.
Messrs. Azi and Mwansat on Tuesday keenly contested the position of the Speaker but the election was declared inconclusive following a tie of 12 votes each between the two.
Adamu Gagdi of the PDP, a fresh member, representing Kantana constituency, was elected Deputy Speaker.
The Plateau State House of Assembly has 24 members with PDP having a slight majority of 13 members.
On Tuesday, the Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, directed that the elections be suspended due to a controversy that was likely to disrupt the polls.
The new speaker was immediately sworn-in and other members inaugurated by the clerk of the house.
